A London man who acted as a moderator on multiple child sexual abuse forums across the dark web has been jailed for six years after investigators discovered nearly 87,000 indecent images of children stored on his electronic devices.
Matthew Slate, 36, from Wood Green in north London, held senior positions on several pro-paedophile websites, including serving as a “global moderator” on the notorious dark web forum Olympus, according to the National Crime Agency (NCA).
Authorities said Slate played an active role in online communities dedicated to sharing child sexual abuse material and engaging in explicit discussions involving the exploitation of children.
The investigation began after officers received intelligence suggesting Slate possessed indecent images of children. He was arrested in March last year, and officers subsequently searched his London flat, where they seized three electronic devices.
During forensic examinations, investigators uncovered approximately 87,000 indecent images of children. More than 15,200 of those were classified as Category A material, the most serious category under UK law.
The NCA said one of the seized computers was actively logged into an online forum where child sexual abuse was being discussed at the time of the raid. Another browser tab reportedly displayed an image-hosting platform used to upload and share illegal material.
Investigators also revealed that Slate helped finance and co-create a new dark web image-hosting site specifically designed to allow users to upload child abuse content anonymously.
During police interviews, Slate provided a prepared statement claiming he “never intentionally arranged or facilitated the sexual abuse of children.” He also alleged he had been blackmailed into financially supporting the image-hosting platform. However, investigators said he provided no evidence to support those claims.
Slate later pleaded guilty to multiple offences, including five counts of distributing indecent photographs or pseudo-photographs of children, two counts of arranging or facilitating the sexual exploitation of a child under 13, three counts of making indecent images of children, and one count of possessing a prohibited image of a child.
He was sentenced to six years in prison on Friday and handed a ten-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order.
Robert Lay, a senior investigation officer at the NCA, described Slate as an active participant in several dark web child abuse communities.
“Slate’s depravity led him to become an active member of multiple pro-paedophile forums across the dark web,” Lay said.
“He encouraged others to view, share and discuss vile crimes against children with no regard for the victims involved.”
The NCA reiterated its commitment to tackling online child exploitation and pursuing offenders operating anonymously through the dark web.
Officials said the case highlights the growing threat posed by organised online child abuse networks and the continued efforts by law enforcement agencies to identify and prosecute those involved in distributing illegal material.
